DUNMORE, Pa. — Penn State Scranton recently inducted three new members into Sigma Beta Delta — the International Honor Society for Business, Management and Administration. Business students Thomas Braveris, Andrew Harsche and David Stoshick received their membership certificates and the cords and pins they will wear at Penn State Scranton’s Commencement Ceremony on May 10.

Sigma Beta Delta is a lifetime honor, reserved for fourth-year students who demonstrate exceptional academic and community engagement. Membership is by invitation, where candidates must rank in the top 15% of the Business or Project and Supply Chain Management programs and show significant involvement in campus or community activities.

Assistant Professor of Project and Supply Chain Management Zhuang Qian, who serves as the chapter president, along with Associate Teaching Professor Jim Wilkerson and Chief Academic Officer Durell Johnson, commended the inductees for their embodiment of wisdom, honor and aspirations.

“Sigma Beta Delta requires more than a high GPA,” Qian said. “Sigma Beta Delta also values honorable engagement in the student’s campus life or community, such as club membership, service as a club officer, student government service, Open House tour guide service, active membership on a Penn State Scranton Athletics team, Undergraduate Research Fair participation, THON fundraising, and so forth. Civic and community engagement include many things like volunteer work, military service, active membership in organizations that do good (e.g., conservation clubs, churches, charities, youth-support programs, etc.), volunteer firefighter duty, volunteer health services and many others. These kinds of campus and civic engagement, along with outstanding academic performance and no problems under Penn State’s student conduct code, are what form the ‘honor’ in the idea of ‘honor society.’”

Established in 1994, Sigma Beta Delta honors academic excellence in higher education, similar to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. With over 400 chapters across 47 states and internationally, Sigma Beta Delta has more than 80,000 members recognized for their achievements. The Penn State Scranton chapter was chartered in November 2021.
